A Brief But Detailed Description Of How Tooth Decay Works

Tooth decay, in basic terms, is the result of when your tooth is attacked by what is most commonly referred to as plaque once it has formed into acid. The acid is produced by malicious bacteria. Your mouth, whether you’re willing to admit it or not, is full of bacteria. Some of this bacteria isn’t all that bad. In fact, they’re good because they protect you from the bad stuff. But, unfortunately, there are also tons of bad bacteria in there as well, and the more time you spend without brushing, flossing, and rinsing, the stronger this bacteria becomes, and in time, they develop plaque that can eviscerate your teeth if you leave them to their own devices.

 

What’s more, is that your teeth are all the more vulnerable when you have braces. That’s why you have to brush several more times a day when you have them, since food has a tendency to linger a bit longer as it gets caught in the metal. This allows all the more time for plaque to build up. The acid is formed out of excessive consumption of sugars from food and drinks. The plaque that forms in the mouth is quickly converted to acid by the bacteria once they find a home on your once clean and white teeth. Eventually, your saliva is able to neutralize the plaque, provided sugars are consumed at a reasonable rate and proper brushing is performed at least twice a day for two minutes at a time. But often times, this neutralization can take up to two hours, and in the mean time your teeth may be decaying.

 

As sugars are consumed, there is a process of ‘demineralization’ followed by ‘remineralization’, each of which will be explained shortly. In so many words, demineralization is bad and remineralization is good. At the end of the day, you want minerals in your teeth. Demineralization takes place when the plaque on your teeth is acidic. The acid dissolves phosphate and calcium out of the enamel in your teeth, weakening them and effectively increasing the potential for cavities.

 

Remineralization is the reverse, which occurs in the neutralizing phase mentioned earlier by the saliva. But also, as mentioned, excessive consumption of sugar can cause remineralization to be insufficient. Never forget that ‘all in moderation’ is a motto that applies to virtually everything in life. Nowhere is that more the case than in your consumption of sweets.

 

Abuse your privileges and the acid will dissolve your teeth, eventually to the point where you form a cavity. Even then, it’s not the end of the world. The real problem is once the bacteria enters into the cavity, leaving your tooth infected, which puts you in lots of pain and discomfort.
